The Necessity of Tragedy

Some people ask me when they read my works, why do you write such sad things? Why don’t you write more happy stories? My response to them is simple, honest and always the same.

Because we need the grief.

I have been told in life that money and power are the great motivators. However, I believe that tragedy commands just as powerful a regard. A favourite author of mine once said,

“Any fool can be happy. It takes a man with real heart to make beauty out of the stuff that makes us weep.”

Just as dark is to light, we need the sadness. We need to know the dark, bitter things to know what sweetness is. We must first have sadness to experience joy. I am a purveyor of sorrow, a heavy trade but no less noble than that of a comedian of motivational speaker, because it is through the tears that we are able to see clearly and know ourselves.

I can tell by your tears that you’ll remember it all.

And now, for Philosophical Hedgehog.
